The story follows Celie Johnson (Fantasia Barrino) a young Black woman living in the South in the early 20th century, and the hardships she faced in life, including her abusive father and husband. With the support of a sultry songstress named Shug Avery (Taraj P. Henson) and her stepdaughter, Celie finds immense strength in a new kind of sisterhood.

A film adapation of the Broadway musical, which itself is adapted the 1985 Spielberg film based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.
