Welsh National Opera’s Family Concert is back with a vibrant and welcoming introduction to live orchestral music.
Hosted by Elin Llwyd, the concert blends well-known favourites brought to life by WNO Orchestra, alongside a group of outstanding soloists performing recognisable pieces for all the family. Offenbach’s energetic Can-Can brings a sense of joy and familiarity, encouraging young audiences to connect straight away while Beethoven’s music from Prometheus stands out with its bold, cinematic quality almost like a superhero soundtrack, making it both accessible and thrilling, even for those new to classical music.

With presenter Elin Llwyd as your guide, travel from the gods of Ancient Greece and Rome to the legends of Wales. Follow the stories, meet their characters and take on challenges together.

WNO Family Concert turns an hour with WNO Orchestra into a game for the whole family. Live music, dance and light fill the stage as Elin helps everyone follow the action. Feel the theatre shake with Holst’s Mars, then finish the adventure with the Can-Can.

A first step into orchestral music
No musical knowledge is needed. Elin explains what you are hearing as the concert unfolds. Find out what an overture is, meet the instruments and hear a real harpsichord - even if you have never been to a classical concert before.
Music you may already know
You might recognise more of the music than you expect. The programme includes bold, lively pieces such as Mars and the Can-Can. You don’t need to know their names. Simply listen, imagine and see where they take you.
A concert you can play
Clap with the orchestra, try a rhythm in 5/4 and take on challenges with your family. Children are encouraged to react, make sounds and join the game.

Elin Llwyd leads every stage of the journey. She introduces the stories, opens up the music and makes sure first-time listeners never feel left behind.
Music everyone can enjoy
Music, movement and visual storytelling give everyone a way into the experience. English and Welsh captions and BSL interpretation help more people follow the action, no matter the language.

The concert lasts about one hour and has no interval. There is none of the pressure of traditional concert rules. Children are welcome to vocalise, respond and take part, and ear defenders are available.
